Strengthening Families: A Guide for Mandated Reporters as Supporters

We are all mandated reporters. Find out what that means for you.

The Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) recently introduced two new resources:

1. Strengthening Families: A Guide for Mandated Reporters as Supporters

This comprehensive manual is designed to help mandated reporters understand their legal responsibilities, distinguish between poverty and neglect, and support families while ensuring child safety.

This guide includes:

✔️ How to report suspected abuse or neglect

✔️ The role of implicit and explicit bias in reporting

✔️ The difference between poverty and neglect

✔️ DCYF’s investigation process and what happens after a report is made

✔️ How to use DCYF’s Support and Response Unit (SRU) when concerns don’t rise to the level of abuse or neglect

2. Mandated Reporters as Supports Quick Reference

Additionally, DCYF developed a condensed one-page version for quick reference.

Collectively, we play a crucial role not just in mandated reporting, but also in mandated supporting—helping families access resources and services that promote stability and well-being. We encourage you to review this guide, spread the word, and continue to be strong advocates for Rhode Island’s children and families.
